Unique Race Distance:
The Sandling Beach 50 is a hybrid between a traditional International distance race and a half iron distance race.
Swim - 1 mile: Bike - 40 miles: Run - 9 miles
Time Trial Starts:
The Sandling Beach 50 will be a Time Trial Start - with all participants starting the swim one at a time - going off every couple of seconds.
Sandling Beach State Park:
Sandling Beach State Recreation Area is located on Falls Lake - just north of Raleigh and east of Durham. There is plenty of parking immediately at the race site.
Course Descriptions:
Swim:
The swim for the Sandling Beach 50 will start and finish on the huge white sandy beach at Sandling Beach. The 2-loop one mile swim is a triangular shaped course. Participants complete the first lap of the swim exit the water, run along the beach for about 10 yards and then re-enter the water to begin the second lap. In 2016, this was a wetsuit legal race. We’ll post a water temperature on our website on Thursday night of race week.
Bike:
The 40 mile bike course exits the park and heads north on Hwy 50 for about two miles and then heads east on Old Weaver Road for another two miles. At that point, participants will turn left onto Beaver Dam Rd. and begin the first of two 15.5-mile loops. Please refer to the course maps to see specifics. There is one water bottle hand-off location at the beginning of the second loop (mile 20). The bike course can best be described as ""rolling"", however there are a couple of pretty challenging hills.
Run:
The 9 mile run course stays completely inside the park boundaries. It’s a two loop course with each loop being 4.5 miles, and because the run is entirely on park roads, practically the entire run course is shaded.
