Lake James State Park:
The race takes place at the beautiful new Lake James State Park – located about 40 miles east of Asheville and about 65 miles northwest of Charlotte along I-40 (near Marion, NC).
There is lots of parking immediately at the race site – one of the really nice amenities that we enjoy in staging events at North Carolina State Parks.
Course Descriptions:
Swim:
The swim for the Lake James 50 takes place in beautiful Lake James, which sits in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Lake James is a fairly deep lake with very clear water. The triangular shaped swim course will start and finish on the beach. The swim for the Lake James 50 is a two-loop swim. Particioants will complete one lap of the swim, exit the water, and re-enter the water immediately to begin the second loop.
We will post the water temperature on Thursday night of race week.
This will be a time trial start - with participants starting one at a time every 2-3 seconds.
Bike:
The 40 mile bike course basically encircles Lake James. Participants in the Lake James 50 will do two laps around the lake. The transition area sits at an elevation of about 1200 feet above sea level. The bike course reaches a maximum elevation of about 1450 feet, so there won’t be any major climbs on this course, but there will be a few pretty good “hills” to negotiate. The biggest climbs will be inside the park. Only a handful of right turns on this 40 mile course and some spectacular scenery - participants in the 2016 race raved about the quality and beauty of this bike course.
Run:
The two-loop 9 mile run course is an “out & back” course that stays entirely within the boundaries of Lake James State Park. There are a few pretty good hills to negotiate so this is a course that definitely favors stronger runners.
